Opinions about the sitter's identity are divided. It may represent Ralph Grey (1630-1675) who succeeded his father as 2nd Baron Grey of Warke in 1674. Chaloner Smith suggests it more probably represents his son Forde Grey (1655-1701) who was Lord Grey at the time the plate was engraved. A Protestant Whig, Forde Grey was implicated in the Rye House Plot.
