Alfred Gilbert produced cast medals from the 1880s, but it was his design for a struck medal celebrating Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee that prompted a reconsideration of this method in the last decade of the nineteenth century. Commissioned by the Art Union of London, this double-sided medal was praised for its soft modelling and matt surfaces, contrasting sharply with the glass-like smoothness and regularity of contemporary examples.
