Son of Emperor Tewdros II of Ethiopia and Empress Tiruwork Wube. His father committed suicide after his defeat by the British, led by Sir Robert Napier, at the Battle of Magdala in 1868, in which the British forces came to rescue the protestant missionaries he was holding hostage. Alamayou was orphaned when his mother died during the trip to the coast, the British forces had intended to take them both to Britain but Alamayou travelled alone.
