Hardwicke is seen in his chancellor's gown. This portrait is copied from that of 1763 by William Hoare formerly at Wimpole in Cambridgeshire, then the Hardwicke seat. This watercolour is probably connected with the engraving for the British Cabinet, 1800, made and published by E. Harding for whom Gardiner worked.
