Painter. His father's resistance to his training as an artist was overcome on the advice of William Holman Hunt, and Morris was allowed to study at the British Museum and enter the Royal Academy Schools. There he emerged as a star pupil, winning the gold medal and a travelling studentship to Italy. Morris enjoyed considerable success in the 1860s and 1870s, firstly with subject pictures based on the sea and the sailor's life and then with religious subjects.
