Philip Metcalfe made his money as a brewer and distiller, owner of the Three Mills Distillery on the River Lea, and was active as a philanthropist and collector. He was a member of the Society of Dilettanti, a club for art connoisseurs, and a friend of Samuel Johnson, Sir Joshua Reynolds and many other prominent artistic and literary figures.
