A Whig politician who won universal popularity for his charm and moderation, Petty-Fitzmaurice entered Parliament in 1802. His first office, aged twenty-five, was as Chancellor of the Exchequer in the coalition 'Ministry of All the Talents'. On nearly doubling property tax, he gained a reputation for high moral principles and sympathy with the oppressed. During the Whigs' long years in opposition, he championed various causes; anti-slavery, Catholic emancipation and law reform.
