Appointed Archbishop of Armagh in 1669, Plunket was the ecclesiastical head of the Catholic Church in Ireland at a time when Catholic clergy were outlawed. He was forced to perform his ministry in secret, living in a network of safe houses and travelling in disguise. In the frenzied atmosphere of the Popish Plot, he was captured and falsely accused of planning a 70,000-strong Catholic rebellion.
