Birket Foster was an artist whose landscapes are typical of the Victorian age. He was one of the most successful British watercolourists of his generation. Initially an apprentice wood engraver, he soon transferred his skills to landscape draughtsmanship and worked for many important periodicals, including Punch and the Illustrated London News.
