This portrait depicts Campbell in her costume for Magda in which she played the title role, a 'new woman' whose sexual freedom and artistic career challenged Victorian conventions. Opening on 3 June 1896, the production was a failure but Campbell successfully revived the role in 1900, under her own management at the Royalty Theatre, Soho.
