Born into an aristocratic family in the princely state of Bhopal, Ikramullah served as a senior member in the Indian Civil Service for the Government of British India. He went on to join Jinnah's Partition Committee becoming Pakistan's first Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and Ambassador to Canada, France, Portugal and the United Kingdom.
