Bengali politician; Pakistan's third Prime Minister. Educated at the Presidency University in Calcutta, he began his political career as a supporter of the Muslim League, joining Prime Minister H. S. Suhrawardy's provincial cabinet of Bengal in the 1940s. Following the partition of India in 1947 he served as a foreign diplomat in Burma (1948), Canada (1949-52), and twice served in the United States.
