An Irish republican and nationalist, Home Rule constitutional politician and MP, who founded the Irish Land League. In 1865 he joined the revolutionary Fenian brotherhood that sought to secure political freedom for Ireland. He was arrested in 1870 for sending firearms to London, and was imprisoned for seven years. In 1879 Davitt founded the Irish Land League, which organised resistance to absentee landlordism and sought to relieve the poverty of the tenant farmers through fair rents and secure tenures.
