Mary, Queen of Scots NPG D13129

© National Portrait Gallery, London

after Claude Vignon

This posthumous French engraving of Mary explicitly shows her as a Catholic martyr. Although Elizabeth I maintained that her motives in having Mary executed were political, Mary came to be regarded in most Catholic countries as having died for her faith, particularly in France, where she had briefly been Queen and had many supporters. From the time of her death, visual imagery promoting this view of her as a martyr was produced. This image derives from a combination of portraits produced during her lifetime.

Card size: 125mm x 175mm

Images are printed in their original proportions, within a white border.
