Hitchens studied at the Royal Academy Schools before being elected a member of the influential Seven and Five Society of modern British artists. In 1940, Hitchens, his wife Mollie and baby son John (who later became a painter) moved from Hampstead to Greenleaves, Petworth, West Sussex, where he was able to develop his mature style of semi-abstract, richly coloured paintings.
