by Unknown photographer

A Pre-Raphaelite model, Spartali also sat for Julia Margaret Cameron for a memorable sequence of photographs. A dedicated artist, who studied with Ford Madox Brown and exhibited at the Grosvenor Gallery, she was described by Henry James as 'a sincere, spontaneous, naive Pre-Raphaelite'. In 1871 she married journalist W.J. Stillman, and subsequently lived in Italy. Her son Michael Stillman became an architect and settled in the United States.
