Marianne North travelled the globe in order to satisfy her passion for painting the world's fauna and flora. Having first travelled with her widowed father, after his death she took up a peripatetic life, painting the flowers of the many countries she visited. In the course of her travels, North crossed every continent and had four new species of plant named after her.
