Equally acclaimed in tragedy or comedy, Rawlings's celebrated performances included Lady Macbeth and Eliza Doolittle. In 1936 she played Katie O'Shea in Parnell by Elsie T. Schauffler, and Rawlings re-wrote this part herself when the play was banned. In 1938 she was much acclaimed as Karen Selby in The Flashing Stream, a part that had been written for her by Charles Morgan.
