Born in Canada, Seymour joined The Royal Ballet in 1957 and two years later was made a principal. In 1958 she created a role in MacMillan's The Burrow and became his muse. Acclaimed as a great actress-ballerina, her dramatic gifts were the inspiration for many of the leading roles in his ballets, including Juliet in Romeo and Juliet (1965) and the title role in Anastasia (1971).
