Lowry is renowned for his industrial landscapes of northern England, peopled with matchstick figures, and for his reclusive private life. He was born in Rusholme, Manchester and studied at Manchester School of Art (1905-15) under Adolf Valett, whose view of urban Mancunian smog may have influenced him, and Salford College of Art (1915-25). He worked as a rent-collector and painted in his spare time. He was elected a Royal Academician in 1962, and given the freedom of the City of Salford in 1965.
