McCarthy played Lady Macbeth for the Shakespeare Society at St George's Hall, Exeter, in 1895, a performance given to help raise funds to erect a statue of Sarah Siddons in Paddington. Commenting on her performance, George Bernard Shaw wrote in The Saturday Review , 'She can hold an audience whilst she is doing everything wrongly…some years of hard work would make her a valuable recruit to the London stage'.
