Edward's importance as the heir to the throne meant that numerous portraits of him were commissioned. There is therefore a far more complete record of his physical appearance as a child than of his half-sisters Mary and Elizabeth. The painting shown here is based on a likeness captured in a drawing by Hans Holbein the Younger.
