Began his career as a journalist in Cork. He worked on the Liverpool Northern Daily Times before moving to London as parliamentary reporter to the Morning Star, of which he was editor from 1864 to 1868. On leaving the Morning Star he travelled to the United States, where he toured, visiting most of the then thirty-seven states.
