J.S.C Banerjee was a highly educated Indian Christian who, due to a shortage of European personnel in the twentieth century, was employed as a missionary in India in 1913 and given a European salary. Whilst some endorsed his unusually high salary, others at the time thought that Indian churches should support their own Indian missionaries and that Indian missionaries should be paid a level that the church could afford.
