Anatomist. Studied under William Hunter and other eminent surgeons in London and Paris. On his return to London he began to teach anatomy and develop a vast museum of specimens illustrating human and comparative anatomy. Brookes' principal scientific discovery was in a new method of preserving subjects for class dissections and lectures. For this he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society.
