Joseph Knight began his journalistic career in 1861 as drama critic for the Literary Gazette, and spent the rest of his life writing mostly about the contemporary stage. In 1869 he succeeded John Abraham Heraud as drama critic of The Athenaeum, a post he retained until his death. He was also drama critic for the Sunday Times, The Globe and the Daily Graphic.
