Educated in Manchester, Farington went to London in 1763 to train in the studio of Richard Wilson. In the next three years he won premiums for landscape drawing from the Society of Artists, of which he became a member in 1765. Farington joined the Royal Academy at its inception in 1769, was elected an associate in 1783 and an academician two years later.
