John Vaughan became a Member of Parliament after the Restoration of the Monarchy in 1660. He was known for his love of the theatre and the pleasures of London society; Samuel Pepys described him as 'one of the lewdest fellows of the age'. In 1674 he was appointed governor of Jamaica, a crown colony that was dominated by plantations worked by enslaved Africans.
