After graduating from Christ Church, Oxford, in 1851, Spencer Stanhope became a captain in the West Yorkshire militia. He took up painting as a pupil of G. F. Watts, and exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1859. After 1880, he lived in Florence where he painted frescoes in the Anglican church, as well as in Marlborough College chapel and the Oxford Union.
