© National Portrait Gallery, London
by Ford Madox Brown
Madox Brown undertook a small number of ‘industrial’ commissions in the 1870s as a way of promoting his skills in portraiture. The prominent inscription shows that it was commissioned by the shareholders of the Ocean Steam Colliery in gratitude for the sitter’s contribution to the business, and presented to his wife. The sitter is shown in comfortable surroundings and smart clothes that signify his success.
Card size: 125mm x 175mm
Images are printed in their original proportions, within a white border.
