John Hoole started his career as a clerk in the East India Company in 1744. He was promoted to become an auditor, wrote Present State of the English East India Company's Affairs (1772) and remained there until his retirement. Hole had studied Italian for pleasure, and he gained a reputation as a translator of Italian literature. Amongst other works, he published translations of Torquato Tasso's Jerusalem Delivered (1763), and Ariosto's Orlando Furioso (1773-83). He was also the author of three unsuccessful plays.
