Evelyn's varied life and wide range of interests are reflected in his writings, on subjects as diverse as forestry, engraving, numismatics, air pollution and refrigeration. A Founder Fellow of the Royal Society (1660), Evelyn wrote the first book to be published by the Society, Sylva, or a Discourse on Forest Trees (1664), in which he argued for a policy of tree planting to ensure the maintenance of the Navy.
