Novelist, poet and critic, Wain was taught as an undergraduate by C. S. Lewis and, although a generation younger than most of the Inklings, and at odds with their generally anti-modernist attitudes, was welcomed by them. A Fellow of St John's College Oxford (1946-9), he then lectured in English at Reading (1949-55) and returned to Oxford as Professor of Poetry (1973-8). His best known novel is his first, Hurry on Down (1953), seen as a classic product of the Angry Young Men era.
