Luie was considered a crucial witness in the Tichborne criminal trial based on his claims that he had been a steward on the Osprey, the ship that allegedly rescued survivors of the shipwrecked Bella, and that he recognised the Claimant as one of them. His evidence was suspicious and the trial was suspended to follow up his story, where it was discovered he had only recently been released from Chatham Prison.
