Apparently after the painting by Lely at Hampton Court, where the sitter is identified as Mary II when Princess of Orange. The sitter is portrayed in the allegorical guise of the virgin goddess Diana. Lely painted a number of women as Diana, most notably with his portrait of the 'Windsor Beauty' Frances Stuart.
