Jane and William Morris encouraged their daughters to be artistic and adventurous. Owing to their simple, unfashionable clothes, a cousin called them 'medieval brutes'. Together the four children Jenny and May Morris, and Philip and Margaret Burne-Jones formed a 'secret society'. Philip Burne-Jones (second from left) became a professional painter, and his sister Margaret (second from right) married J.W Mackail, who wrote Jane Morris's biography.
