Trained in the law, James Wilde was called to the Bar as a barrister in 1839 and was elected as a bencher at the Inner Temple in 1856. He rapidly built a successful legal practice on the northern circuit and at Westminster and was made a Queen's Counsel in 1855. In 1860, he was appointed Baron of the Exchequer and was knighted.
