Unitarian minister and writer. Apprenticed as an engineer, but turned to the study of divinity, 1822-7; professor of mental and moral philosophy and political economy at Manchester New College, 1840-57; later professor of religious philosophy. A prolific and powerful writer, Martineau was widely regarded as a champion of theism after his dispute with John Tyndall over scientific materialism.
