Holman's promising career in the Navy was curtailed at the age of twenty-four due to ill health that would affect his joints and eyesight. Invalided out of the Navy, he became completely blind soon afterwards. Determined to remain active and independent, he went on to make a number of voyages that would have been ambitious, even for a sighted traveller, at the time.
