Harding was initially taught by his artist father, he later studied watercolour technique under Samuel Prout. He was articled to the engraver Charles Pye and then worked in the office of the architect Peter Frederick Robinson. Harding first exhibited drawings at the Royal Academy in 1811, at the age of thirteen.
