by Benjamin Smith, after Horace Hone
Irish statesman and patron of the arts. Caulfield was born in Dublin but spent much of his life travelling abroad and living in London, where he formed a friendship with Henry Grattan and enjoyed the society of Joshua Reynolds, Samuel Johnson and William Hogarth. Greatly concerned with the political condition of Ireland, he returned to Dublin in 1773 and intrigued for Irish independence. He was opposed to Catholic emancipation and union with Britain.
