Elected MP for Haddingtonshire 1837; president of the board of trade, 1845; governor-general of India 1847. Under his rule the Punjab became a British province and further territories were annexed; introduced the railway and telegraph to India; his policies much criticised after the outbreak of the Mutiny in 1857.
