After studying at Cambridge, Hyndman worked as a war correspondent on the Pall Mall Gazette reporting on Garibaldi's advances in Italy and becoming fascinated by European nationalism. A substantial inheritance allowed him to combine business interests with political activism. Influenced by Karl Marx, Hyndman determined to establish a new political party aimed at 'the direct representation of labour'.
