Henry Graves was initially employed at by the art dealer Samuel Woodburn, and later became manager of the print department of Messrs Hurst, Robinson & Co. When this firm failed in 1826, Graves purchased much of its print stock jointly with Francis Graham Moon and Thomas Boys. This new partnership became one of the three leading London printsellers, alongside Thomas McLean and Thomas Agnew, and by 1829 it was able to issue a substantial catalogue of engravings.
