Henry Benedict Maria Clement Stuart, Cardinal York NPG D10753

© National Portrait Gallery, London

by Pier Antonio Pazzi, probably after Giovanni Domenico Campiglia

Henry was a son of the exiled Prince James Francis Edward Stuart and younger brother of 'Bonnie Prince Charlie' (the 'Young Pretender'). After the failure of the 1745 rebellion he virtually abandoned the Jacobite cause for the Church, being made a Cardinal in 1747. He bequeathed the Stuart crown jewels to the future George IV in an act which symbolically brought the Jacobite cause to a close.
