Porter's research led to discoveries about the metabolism of plants through new techniques of chromatography which allowed living plant tissues to be studied. After studying at Imperial College London, Porter joined a research group at Cambridge University in 1922. They began investigating the cold storage of apples to better understand the effect of chemical reactions on their deterioration.
