He was editor of Weekly Dispatch and helped develop the Daily Mirror into a mass-circulation picture paper. In 1926, he became drama critic of the Daily Express. With a reputation for candour, he boasted of having been banned at some point from twelve of the forty-one theatres in London's West End. In 1931 Swaffer joined the Daily Herald, where he championed many causes including socialism, conditions in psychiatric hospitals and the 'over-Americanisation' of the stage and the press.
