Born in China to a Chinese father and Belgian mother, she began work as a typist at Beijing hospital in 1931 and studied at Yanjing University and at the University of Brussels. She studied medicine in London (1944-8) and practiced at the Queen Mary Hospital in Hong Kong. Known as Elizabeth Comber following her marriage to British officer Leon F.
