Born in China to a Chinese father and Belgian mother, she began work as a typist at Beijing hospital in 1931 and studied at Yanjing University and at the University of Brussels. She studied medicine in London (1944-8) and practiced at the Queen Mary Hospital in Hong Kong. Known as Elizabeth Comber following her marriage to British officer Leon F. Comber, with whom she travelled to Malaysia, working in a tuberculosis hospital. Since 1942 Suyin has written books covering political history, autobiography and fiction. In... more
