Born in Leamington, Whitby performed in numerous plays in London's West End. In 1920 she appeared in Chu-Chin-Chow at His Majesty's Theatre. Played various Shakespearean characters in Stratford-on-Avon's Memorial Theatre and starred as Laura in Women of Twilight (1952) at The Plymouth in New York. Appeared in several films in the 1940s and 1950s including Quiet Weekend (1947), The Blue Lamp (1950) and Time Without Pity (1956).
