Italian-born Severini moved to Rome in 1899 and briefly studied drawing at the Villa Medici. He settled in Paris in 1906 meeting Georges Braque, Pablo Picasso and other leading artists. In 1910 Severini signed the Futurist manifesto and played an important role in introducing Futurism to the Parisian avant-garde. He had his first solo exhibition in 1913, at the Marlborough Gallery in London.
